Introduction to Birmingham
Birmingham is well known as the ‘workshop of the world’ and the ‘city of a thousand trades’, during Victorian times, Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain. There may be less trade than there used to be but Birmingham has seen a recent artistic revival, making it one of the best cities to visit for culture, shopping and entertainment in Britain. During its industrial high days, Birmingham’s canals were the city’s lifeblood and it is thought that there are more canals in Birmingham than in Venice! Although Birmingham was largely destroyed during the Second World War, Birmingham has bounced back with modern architecture and great urban planning, replacing many of its post war buildings to create a city with attractive walkways, pedestrianized areas and beautiful green spaces. From shopping and dining to cycling and arts, Birmingham is a cosmopolitan place for a city break and a great place to start your adventures in Britain.
